Off-Road Driving Braking Asfar as possible, vehicle speed should be controlled through correct gear selection. Application of the brake pedal should be kept to an absolute minimum. Unless hill descent control (HDC) and ABS have been fitted, any braking on wet, muddy or loose surfaces is likely to cause one or more wheels to lock - the resultant slide could prove dangerous. Hill descent control (HDC) - if fitted During a descent, if engine braking is insufficient to control the vehicle speed, HDC (if selected) automatically operates the brakes to slow the vehicle and maintain a speed relative to the accelerator pedal position. Whendrivingoff-road, HDC can be permanentlyengaged, to ensure that control is maintained whenever 1st or reverse gears are selected. ABS and traction control are still fully operational and will assist if the need arises. NOTE:WithHDCselected,gearchangescanbecarriedout in the normal way. Useofengineforbraking For vehicles NOT fitted with HDC; before descending steep slopes, stop the vehicle at least its length before the descent, select 1st gear. While descending the slope it should be remembered that the engine will provide sufficient braking effort to control the rate of descent and that the brakes should not be applied. Accelerating Usetheacceleratorwith care - any sudden surge of power may induce wheel spin and result in loss of control of the vehicle. 88
