DEVICES FOR REDUCING DIESEL ENGINE EMISSIONS Oxidising catalytic converter This device converts the polluting substances in the exhaust gas (carbon monoxide, unburnt hydro- carbons and particulates) into harmless substances, thus reducing the smokiness and smell associat- ed with diesel engine exhaust fumes. The catalytic converter consists of a stainless steel case containing a honeycomb ceramic core in which there is the precious metal that carries out the catalysing action. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (E.G.R.) system This system recirculates or reuses part of the exhaust gas in a proportion which varies according to engine operating conditions. When necessary, it is used for the control of nitrogen oxide emissions.
