1986 Volvo 740 GL, GLE, Turbo AW71 tranmission (Turbo models) ZF transmission (GL, GLE models) Gear selector positions P park R reverse N neutral D drive 3 2 intermediate 1 and low P (Park) Use this position when parked with the engine running or stopped. Never use P while car is in motion. The transmission is mechanically-locked when in position P. Also, apply the parking brake when parking on grades. Never leave the car when the engine is running. If, by mistake, the gear selector is moved from P, the car may start moving. R (Reverse) Never engage R while car is moving forward. N (Neutral) Neutral position = no gear is engaged.
