CONTROLS AND EQUIPMENT MANUAL TRANSMISSION Reverse The five forward gears and the reverse gear are arranged as illustrated. Only shift into Reverse when the vehicle is not moving. Drive in 5th gear for optimum fuel economy when cruising. H owever if more To engage Rev erse, move lever to right, acceleration is required (when passing press dow n and pull back. for example) shift down. When shifting from 5th gear to R, move gearshift lever to the 3rd/4th gear level WARNING first. To down-shift from 5th gear to 4th Back-up lights go on when you engage gear, do not move shift lev er to the left Reverse gear w ith ignition on. to avoid shifting accidentally into 2nd Gearshift lever gear, which wilt suddenly increase engine speed and may cause damage Start engine with gearshift lever in Neutral, clutch pedal depressed. and loss of vehicle control. Always depress the clutch pedal fully when changing gears. Do not hold the vehicle on a steep hill with the clutch pedal partially depressed. This may cause premature clutch wear or damage. Resting your hand on the shift lever knob while driving will cause premature wear in the tr ansmission. 38
