Air conditioning(specialequipmenton BMw318i, 320,323i) YourBMWcanbe fullyairconditionedby aunitintegratedintothestandardheating and ventilationsystem.This enablesthe car'sinteriortobe eitherraisedorlowered • intemperature. Theairconditioningoperatesbythesame principleas a domesticrefrigerator.The refrigerant(Frigen12) is raisedto a high pressurein the compressorand then passed in gas form to the condenser, which is locatedin frontof the car's radiator.The air drawnin by coolingfan and ram air whichenterswhenthecaris movingcoolstheFrigenvapor,whichthus liquefiesagain.Theliquidrefrigerantthen flowsto theevaporator,passingthrough the dehumidifierflaskon the way.This absorbsany tracesof moisturewhichit stillcontains.In theevaporatortherefrige- rant is releasedthroughan expansion valveand vaporizedagain.The heatnee- dedforthischangeofstateis takenfrom theairflowroundtheunit,whichis produ- ced by the blower.The gaseousrefrige- rant is then drawnintothe compressor again and recompressedto startthe circuita secondtime. 1 Compressorwithmagneticclutch The compressoris equippedwith an 2 Chargingvalve electromagneticclutchwhichcutsin or 3 Condenser out as required.It is controlledby a 4 Dehumidifierflask thermostatswitchon theevaporator. 5 Evaporatorwithblower The electricauxiliaryfan startsautomati- cally when the compressorcuts in or E3 76 225 whenrefrigeranttemperaturereachesa • certainupperlimit.
